Nāhan sits on a ridge in the Shivalik hills of southern Himachal Pradesh and is the headquarters of Sirmaur district. On a map, its streets follow the contours of the hilltop, looping and zigzagging around a compact centre, while roads descend in long curves toward the plains of Haryana and the valleys below. Forest covers much of the surrounding slopes.
The town was founded in the seventeenth century as the capital of the princely state of Sirmaur, and it keeps a planned, orderly feel unusual among hill towns. At its centre lies the Chaugan, a large open ground, with former palaces, temples and a small lake, Rani Tal, nearby. Nāhan is also known for its long-established foundry.
