Nartkala lies on the plain of Kabardino-Balkaria, north-east of Nalchik, where the land flattens out beyond the foothills of the Caucasus. From above, the town appears as a fairly regular grid of long, straight streets divided into rectangular blocks, surrounded by orchards and farmland that continue the same orderly geometry out into the countryside.
It is the administrative centre of Urvansky District, and the railway passing through it has shaped the town. For much of the twentieth century it was called Dokshukino, after the railway station, and took its present name in the 1960s. On the map, the tracks form a firm diagonal line against the grid, with industrial sites clustered beside them.
Rivers draining from the mountains cross the wider area, and their tree-lined courses show as softer, winding bands among the straight fields.
