Novorossiysk lies around Tsemes Bay on Russia's Black Sea coast. From above, the bay dominates: a long, deep inlet with the city on both shores and wharves, cranes and oil terminals along the water. Behind the town, the Markotkh ridge rises sharply, and in winter it funnels the cold north-easterly bora wind down toward the sea.
It is one of the largest ports on the Black Sea. During the Second World War, the Malaya Zemlya beachhead near the bay was held for months, and Novorossiysk later received the title of Hero City. The Abrau-Durso sparkling wine estate lies in the hills to the west.
