Sand spit origin
The island is what remains of a longer spit from the Taman Peninsula. Its slender, slightly curved form still points back toward the coast it came from.

Tuzla Island Map Poster & Print
Tuzla Island is a narrow strip of sand and shingle in the Kerch Strait, the channel that links the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. It was once the tip of a spit extending from the Taman Peninsula, until storms in the twentieth century broke it off to form an island. From above it is a thin, low sliver of land that barely rises above the water.
Its position between the Taman Peninsula to the east and the Kerch Peninsula to the west has made it a contested spot. In 2003, construction of a dam from the Taman side toward the island caused a diplomatic dispute between Russia and Ukraine. Since 2018 the Crimean Bridge has run across the island, carrying road traffic and, from 2019, rail as well.
There are no streets or villages to speak of, so the map is almost entirely about water and alignment. A Tuzla Island map poster captures a rare kind of geography: a sliver of sand stretched across a strait, crossed by the straight line of the bridge, with the shores of two peninsulas on either side.

Kerch Strait waters
Shallow water surrounds the island on every side and opens to the Black Sea in the south and the Sea of Azov in the north, framing it as a thin line between two seas.

Tuzla Island interests people drawn to unusual geography, shifting coastlines and the history of the Kerch Strait. Its thin shape makes a spare, almost graphic image, more line than landmass. It works well in a wide frame, where the surrounding water gives the island room.
