Nyagan lies in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug of Western Siberia, in the basin of the Ob River. It is a young town. It grew in the late twentieth century with the development of nearby oil and gas fields and with the railway that reached it. From above, its planned residential districts sit as clear blocks inside an almost unbroken expanse of taiga.
The streets are orderly and fairly wide, with apartment blocks in groups and industrial zones kept apart. Around the town, the map fills with forest, bogs and small rivers. These winding waterways contrast sharply with the straight lines of the town and its access roads.
