Oltiariq lies in the Fergana region of eastern Uzbekistan, on the southern side of the fertile Fergana Valley. Its name translates from Uzbek as six canals, a fitting description for a place defined by irrigation. From above, the town has a fairly regular pattern of streets around its centre, with main roads leading out toward neighbouring districts and the city of Fergana.
The land surrounding the town is intensively farmed. Canals and irrigation ditches run through it in long lines, often following roads and field edges, and orchards and vineyards form a tight patchwork. To the south, the ground rises toward the mountains that ring the valley.
