Oroville sits where the Feather River comes out of the Sierra Nevada foothills onto the floor of the Sacramento Valley. The river bends through the city, and upstream Lake Oroville spreads into long, branching arms that fill the old canyons. The Oroville Dam, which holds back the lake, is the tallest dam in the United States, and its broad embankment shows clearly across the river's former course.
