Pabianice lies just southwest of Łódź, in central Poland. Like its larger neighbour, it grew rapidly in the nineteenth century as a centre of the textile industry. The small Dobrzynka River runs through the town, and the old centre developed along it, with a market square at its heart.
The town's history is legible on the map. A compact medieval core includes the Renaissance manor house, built for the Kraków chapter, which once owned the town. Around it, large factory complexes and workers' housing from the industrial era form bigger blocks, and later apartment districts spread outward.
