Pescara lies where the Pescara River reaches the Adriatic, and the river divides the city into two halves. That division is historical as well as geographical: the modern city was formed in 1927 by joining Castellammare Adriatico on the north bank with the old town of Pescara on the south. On a map, the river mouth and its harbour sit right at the centre.
The coastline is long and almost perfectly straight, lined by a wide beach and a seafront road. Behind it, the streets follow a fairly regular grid, especially in the northern districts, before the land begins to rise into green hills towards the south and west. The Ponte del Mare, a pedestrian and cycle bridge, crosses near the river mouth.
