Písek sits on the Otava River in South Bohemia, and the river defines the shape of its map. The historic centre occupies one bank on gently rising ground, its irregular medieval streets gathered around a long main square, while later districts spread across both sides of the water. Parks and wooded hills close in around the town, giving the built-up area a clear edge.
The town's defining landmark is the Stone Bridge, built in the thirteenth century and the oldest surviving bridge in the Czech Republic, older than Prague's Charles Bridge.
