Placentia lies in north Orange County, California, between Fullerton, Brea, Yorba Linda and Anaheim. The map is organised around a grid of arterial boulevards, a mile or so apart, with residential streets inside each square curling into loops and cul-de-sacs. The Orange Freeway runs along the western side of the city, and the land rises gently toward the hills in the north.
Before the suburbs came, this was citrus country, and the city's motto, A Pleasant Place, echoes the Latin roots of its name. In recent years, a large rail project lowered the freight line into a trench through the city, removing several level crossings and changing how the old downtown relates to the tracks.
