Poughkeepsie sits on the east bank of the Hudson River, roughly halfway between New York City and Albany. From above, the city climbs from the waterfront in a loose grid, with Main Street running inland from the river and neighbourhoods spreading across the higher ground to the east. The Fall Kill winds through the city on its way to the Hudson, adding a small, twisting line to the pattern.
Two crossings dominate the riverfront. The Mid-Hudson Bridge carries road traffic to the west bank, and just to the north the former railroad bridge now serves as the Walkway Over the Hudson, one of the longest elevated pedestrian bridges in the world.
