Poway sits in a valley in inland San Diego County and calls itself the City in the Country. The map explains the name. Housing and a main commercial road fill the valley floor, while granite hills rise on almost every side and big stretches of open land remain above the streets.
To the northeast, Lake Poway fills a small reservoir in the hills and connects to trails leading up Mount Woodson. The mountain is known for Potato Chip Rock, a thin slab of granite that hikers climb for photographs. Iron Mountain rises to the east.
