Promissão lies in the north-western interior of São Paulo state, in rolling farm country cut by the Tietê River. From above, the town is laid out on a clear, regular grid of blocks, typical of the towns that grew along the railways of interior São Paulo. The urban area is compact, and its streets end neatly where fields and pasture begin.
To the north, the Tietê has been dammed to form a long reservoir, and its broad, branching shape dominates the regional map.
