Redondela lies at the inner end of the Ría de Vigo in Galicia, where the estuary narrows and turns toward the San Simón inlet. The map shows the town gathered around the lower course of a small river, with streets climbing the surrounding green hills and the shoreline curving away toward the open ría.
It's known as the town of viaducts. Two nineteenth-century railway viaducts cross the old centre at rooftop height, a striking sight from the streets. Offshore lies the island of San Simón, and nearby the strait of Rande was the site of a major naval battle in 1702. The Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago passes through the town.

The inner Ría de Vigo forms a sheltered bay off the town, with San Simón island, once a lazaretto and later a prison, just offshore.
Camino Portugués
The Portuguese route to Santiago passes through Redondela, which makes the town a familiar stop for pilgrims walking north from Porto and Tui.
