Rocinha occupies a steep hillside in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro, between the neighbourhoods of Gávea and São Conrado, below the rock peaks of Dois Irmãos. It is one of the largest favelas in Brazil. From above, the map shows an extraordinary density of buildings pressed together, cut by narrow alleys and stairways that follow the fall of the land.
The Estrada da Gávea winds up through the community in long switchbacks, serving as its main road and the route most traffic follows. At the bottom, the Zuzu Angel tunnel and the coastal road link São Conrado to the rest of the south zone, while forest bounds the upper slopes.
