Rösrath lies just east of Cologne, where the flat Rhine lowland starts to rise into the wooded hills of the Bergisches Land. Its districts are strung along roads and along the valley of the Sülz, a small river that winds through the municipality. From above, the town reads less as a single centre and more as a chain of settlements separated by green space.
To the south and west lies the Wahner Heide, a large area of heath and forest that is now a protected nature reserve. On a street map it appears as a broad, nearly empty zone crossed by only a few paths, in strong contrast with the residential streets beside it. Forest also covers much of the higher ground to the east.
