Samtredia lies in the Imereti region of western Georgia, on the broad lowland that opens toward the Black Sea. Its map is organised around the railway: tracks arrive from several directions and meet here, and the town spreads out on both sides of them. Streets follow a largely regular layout across the flat ground.
The town is known in Georgia as an important railway junction, where lines toward the Black Sea ports branch from the main line running east.
