Sarāi Ākil lies in Kaushambi district in Uttar Pradesh, on the fertile land between the Ganges and the Yamuna west of Prayagraj. The ground is almost completely flat, so roads shape the map rather than relief: a dense knot of lanes at the centre, main routes out to neighbouring towns, and villages scattered across the fields.
Like many towns of the doab, it grew as a trading point for the surrounding farmland. The word sarai in its name recalls the roadside inns that once served travellers across northern India. The district is named after ancient Kaushambi, one of the major cities of early Indian history, whose remains lie in the same region.
