Sherghāti lies in the Gaya district of southern Bihar, on the flat plains that rise gradually toward the Chota Nagpur plateau. The town has grown along its main roads, with a dense core of markets and lanes where they meet. Beyond that, the streets thin out into villages and farmland crossed by field boundaries and small watercourses.
The town's name is traditionally connected with Sher Shah Suri, the sixteenth-century ruler whose road-building shaped northern India, and a major highway still passes nearby. Like many Bihar towns, it serves as a market for the surrounding farming villages, and roads fan out from it across the countryside.
