Shirati is in the Rorya area of Tanzania's Mara Region, on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria and a short distance from the border with Kenya. On a map the lake dominates. Its shoreline curves along one side of the frame, with inlets and small headlands, while the town and its roads sit on the gently rising land above.
The settlement is loosely arranged, with a few main roads, clusters of buildings and paths leading down toward the water. Farmland and scattered homesteads fill the surrounding country. The border with Kenya lies to the north, and the roads toward it and toward the rest of Mara Region are the longest lines on the map.
