Shuifu lies in the far northeast of Yunnan, on the south bank of the Jinsha River, the upper Yangtze, where it forms the boundary with Sichuan. The city is squeezed between the water and steep hillsides, so its map is long and narrow. Streets run parallel to the river, and cross streets climb short distances before the slopes take over.
The Xiangjiaba Dam, one of the large hydroelectric projects on the Jinsha, stands on the river nearby. Its reservoir and structures changed the riverside, and the city has grown with the related development. On a Shuifu map poster, the broad river is the dominant shape, a wide band of water that sets the direction of everything beside it.
Across the river lies Sichuan, and downstream the Jinsha continues toward Yibin, where it becomes known as the Yangtze. Around Shuifu, farmland and villages occupy the terraces and small valleys. The result is a city closely fitted to a river corridor and hemmed in by hills.
