Slobozia is the capital of Ialomița County in southeastern Romania, set on the Ialomița River in the heart of the Bărăgan Plain. The terrain is almost entirely level, and the map shows that in its order: long straight roads leading out across open farmland, and a town layout that spreads easily without hills to interrupt it.
The Bărăgan is one of Romania's main grain regions, a steppe-like expanse of wheat and sunflower fields under a wide sky. Slobozia grew as a market and administrative centre for this land, and the twentieth century added apartment districts and industrial zones. The river, winding and slow, gives the otherwise geometric landscape its one soft curve.
