Songcheng lies on the northeastern coast of Fujian, the urban centre of Xiapu County. From above, the town sits between green hills and the sea, its streets filling the lower ground and spreading along valleys toward the coast. Beyond the built area the map breaks into irregular inlets, bays and islands typical of this part of the Chinese coastline.
The Xiapu coast is known for its wide tidal mudflats and the farming of seaweed and shellfish on them. Photographers come to capture the patterns of poles, nets and boats on the flats at low tide, which look almost like drawings themselves when seen from above.
