Tooele lies in the Tooele Valley west of Salt Lake City, with the Oquirrh Mountains rising to the east. The map shows the wide, regular street grid typical of Utah towns, with blocks laid out along numbered streets, slowly climbing the slope toward the foothills.
The town grew with mining and smelting in the surrounding mountains, and later with the Tooele Army Depot, a large military installation whose grounds lie on the south-west side of town. The Great Salt Lake lies to the north of the valley, and the desert extends to the west.
