Tuzla Map Poster & Print
Tuzla takes its name from the Turkish word for salt, and salt has shaped the city for centuries. Extraction of brine from beneath the centre caused parts of the old town to subside, and the city has since worked to stabilise and restore its historic core. Today it is one of the largest cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the centre of Tuzla Canton.
The most unusual feature on the map is the group of Pannonian Lakes, artificial saltwater lakes close to the centre, fed by the same underground deposits. They appear as distinct shapes surrounded by paths and beaches. The Jala river runs through the valley, and the main roads follow it east and west, stretching the city into a long band.
North of the centre, the land rises toward the Majevica hills, and residential districts climb the lower slopes. A Tuzla map poster brings together the compact old town, the lakes, the river corridor and the hillside neighbourhoods, drawing a city whose surface still records what lies beneath it, in a composition that holds together at any size.

Old town core
The historic centre is compact and irregular, its layout reflecting both Ottoman-era origins and the lasting effects of subsidence caused by salt extraction.
Jala valley
The small river runs through the valley that holds the city, and the main roads follow its course, giving Tuzla its long east–west shape.
