Urakam lies in the Malappuram district of northern Kerala, in the rolling midland country between the coast and the Western Ghats. The landscape here is hilly, with laterite ridges, coconut and areca groves and small paddy fields in the valleys. Settlements are spread out rather than clustered into dense towns.
