Urla lies on the peninsula west of İzmir, between the Gulf of İzmir and the open Aegean. The town has two parts. The old centre stands a little inland, and the harbour quarter, İskele, sits on the shore of a shallow bay with small islands. Winding roads connect the two across low hills.
The ancient city of Klazomenai stood on this coast, and its remains are around İskele and Karantina Island, which is joined to the shore by a causeway. In recent years the Urla area has also become known again for wine, with vineyards spread across the countryside.

A causeway connects the shore to Karantina Island, close to ancient Klazomenai. It forms a short line across the water that is easy to recognise.

The inland town and the harbour quarter are linked by roads over the hills. This gives the map two areas of density with open land between them.
