Waina sits in the far south of Gansu, where the province's dry northern plateaus give way to folded, wooded mountains. The town is small and densely built. On a map its shape is set almost entirely by the land: buildings and roads keep to the flatter ground of a valley, and the outlines of the surrounding slopes are left open around them.
From above, the street pattern reads as a series of lines running roughly parallel to the watercourse, crossed by short connecting lanes where the valley allows.
