Winterswijk lies in the Achterhoek, the eastern corner of Gelderland, just a few kilometres from the German border. Its centre is compact, with streets spreading out from the old core, and the railway lines from Zutphen and Arnhem end at its station. Beyond the town, the map opens into one of the most varied rural landscapes in the Netherlands.
The countryside around Winterswijk is a mosaic of small fields, hedgerows, wooded banks and scattered farms, with winding lanes and brooks running between them. Unlike the straight polders of the west, this is an old, irregular landscape, and on the map it forms a fine, intricate pattern that surrounds the town on every side.
