Zittau lies in the southeastern corner of Saxony, where Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic meet. The Neisse River forms the border on the eastern side of town. From above, the historic centre stands out immediately. It is an almost circular old town of dense streets and squares, surrounded by a ring of green where the city fortifications once stood.
Inside the ring, the market square, the town hall and several large churches anchor a tight pattern of medieval streets. Outside it, nineteenth-century districts spread out in more regular blocks. To the south, the land rises into the Zittau Mountains, a small but distinctive range of sandstone ridges and forests.
Zittau is known for its Lenten veils, large painted cloths dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and displayed in the town's museums. A Zittau map poster shows the clear ring of the old town, the Neisse on the border and the start of the mountains to the south.
