Żyrardów Map Poster & Print
Żyrardów is one of the most complete industrial towns of its era in Europe. It grew around a linen mill founded in the 1830s and takes its name from Philippe de Girard, the French engineer who invented a mechanical flax-spinning process. The factory, workers' housing, schools, church and park were all designed together.
From above, the result is unusually orderly. Straight streets of brick workers' houses run in parallel rows. The mill complex forms a large block at the centre, and a landscaped park and market square give the plan its focal points. Later suburbs spread out more loosely beyond the historic core.
A Żyrardów map poster shows that planned geometry clearly. The regular blocks of the factory settlement contrast with the freer layout around it, and the railway line to Warsaw runs across one edge of the frame.

Linen mill complex
The former mill buildings occupy large, solid blocks in the middle of the settlement. They are the anchor around which the whole plan was drawn.
Park and square
A landscaped park and a central square break up the grid. Their open shapes give the composition a natural focus and a moment of air.
