The river runs along the valley floor near the town, splitting into channels and curves that contrast with the straight streets and give the map its natural boundary.

Talas Map Poster & Print
Talas is the administrative centre of Kyrgyzstan's Talas Region, set in a broad valley in the north-west of the country. The Talas River flows past the town, and mountain ranges rise on either side of the valley. The map naturally divides into flat irrigated land at the centre and steep, folded ground toward the edges.
The town has a largely regular plan of long, straight avenues and rectangular blocks. The valley is closely associated with the epic hero Manas: the Manas Ordo complex, with the medieval mausoleum known as Manas Gumbez, lies a short distance from the town. The Battle of Talas, fought in 751 between Abbasid and Tang armies, takes its name from this river.
On a Talas map poster the grid of the town sits within a pattern of irrigation channels, field boundaries and tree-lined roads stretching across the valley floor. The river adds a meandering line along one side, and roads heading east and west follow the valley toward neighbouring districts. It is a clean, orderly composition with a sense of open space around it.

Rectangular street grid
Long parallel streets and regular blocks make up most of the town, a disciplined pattern that reads clearly even at the smallest print size.
Irrigated valley floor
Around the town, fields and irrigation channels form a patchwork of straight lines, the product of farming a dry valley with water from the mountains.
