Bondowoso lies inland in East Java, away from the coast, in a basin surrounded by mountains. The Ijen highlands rise to the east and the Argopuro range to the west, and on a map the town sits where roads from these uplands converge. Its centre is organised around a traditional alun-alun, the open square found at the heart of many Javanese towns.
Around the square, streets form a loose grid of shops, government buildings and houses, gradually giving way to villages, rice fields and plantations. Rivers flowing down from the surrounding slopes cross the area, and the landscape grows noticeably more rugged toward the edges. The pattern combines the formal centre of a regency capital with the organic spread of rural East Java.
Bondowoso is widely known for tape, a sweet fermented cassava snack, and the region also produces coffee from the Ijen highlands.
