This Fuzhou lies in eastern Jiangxi province and should not be confused with the larger coastal capital of Fujian that shares its name in English. The city occupies a stretch of the Fu River valley, and the river gives its map a clear axis: a wide, gently curving channel with bridges at intervals and the urban area gathered along its course.
The core of the city is the Linchuan district, where older streets form a tighter network near the water. Newer districts stretch outward in wider, more regular blocks with broad avenues, lakes and parks. The area has an unusually strong literary and political heritage.
