Historic city core
Around the Emir's palace and central mosque, closely packed lanes form a dense, intricate texture. It is clearly different from the more open planned districts around it.

Ilorin Map Poster & Print
Ilorin, capital of Kwara State, lies in the transition zone between Nigeria's forested south and the savanna of the north. It grew as a major trading centre in the nineteenth century and became the seat of an emirate, with Yoruba, Fulani, Hausa and other communities living in the city. The Asa River runs northward through the urban area, and the city spreads on either side of it.
The older part of the city, centred on the Emir's palace and the central mosque, has a tight, irregular network of lanes. On an Ilorin map poster, this dense core contrasts with the broader roads, roundabouts and planned estates of newer districts spreading in all directions. On the river, the Asa Dam holds back a reservoir that appears as a smooth shape among the streets.
The University of Ilorin occupies a very large campus on the outskirts, one of the most extensive in the country, and it shows on the map as a wide area of open ground and scattered roads. The city is also known for its traditional pottery and handwoven cloth. Its layout reflects a long history as a meeting point between regions and peoples.

Asa River and dam
The river runs through the city from south to north. A dam creates a reservoir whose outline stands out among the surrounding streets and neighbourhoods.
University grounds
The large university campus takes up a wide area on the outskirts. On the map it reads as open space crossed by a few long roads.
