The Ring Road
This road loops around the city centre and parts of Lalitpur. It gives the composition a natural circular frame and a sense of enclosure.

Kathmandu Map Poster & Print
Kathmandu fills much of a broad valley in the Himalayan foothills, surrounded by green ridges on every side. The Bagmati River flows along the southern and eastern edge of the city, and the Vishnumati joins it from the north. The old town sits between the two rivers. The Ring Road circles the city and part of neighbouring Lalitpur.
At the heart of the old town is Kathmandu Durbar Square, with its temples and royal palace buildings. Nearby are the narrow lanes of Thamel. The valley is scattered with sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Swayambhunath stands on a hill to the west, Pashupatinath lies on the Bagmati, and the great stupa of Boudhanath is to the northeast.
A Kathmandu map poster shows a valley city of winding streets, where courtyards and lanes gather around old squares. The rivers loop through, and the Ring Road draws a clear border. The airport runway is a straight line on the eastern side. The whole composition has an intricate, handmade quality, very different from planned modern capitals.

Bagmati River
The sacred river curves along the south and east, passing Pashupatinath. It separates Kathmandu from Lalitpur on the far bank.
Old town lanes
The narrow, irregular streets around Durbar Square and Thamel form the densest part of the map. The pattern is centuries in the making.
