Rideau Canal
The canal runs south from the Ottawa River through downtown in a gently winding line, framed by parkways on both sides. It is the defining stroke of the map.

Ottawa Map Poster & Print
Ottawa sits on the south bank of the Ottawa River, which forms the border between Ontario and Quebec, with Gatineau directly across the water. On the map the river dominates the northern edge, wide and irregular, with islands, rapids and bridges linking the two provinces. Parliament Hill occupies a bluff above the river, where the downtown grid meets the water.
From the river, the Rideau Canal runs south through the heart of the city. Opened in 1832 and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, its central stretch becomes a skating route every winter. It separates Centretown and the Glebe from Sandy Hill, with the Rideau River beyond. Further out, a broad Greenbelt of farmland and forest wraps around the older city before the suburbs resume.
Ottawa's streets follow a mostly regular grid, loosened by the curves of the river and the canal's winding course. An Ottawa map poster shows the capital at a scale where all of this lines up clearly: the river to the north, the canal cutting through the middle, the Rideau River looping east and the neighbourhoods of Gatineau on the far shore.

Parliament Hill

The Greenbelt
A wide arc of protected land surrounds the inner city, appearing as a band of open space between the older neighbourhoods and the suburbs.
