Xucheng is the seat of Xuwen County, at the southern end of the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong, the southernmost point of mainland China. On a map, the coast is never far away. To the south and west, the town looks out over the Qiongzhou Strait, the stretch of sea that separates the mainland from Hainan Island.
That position makes the area a gateway. Ferries and trains cross the strait from nearby ports to Hainan, and roads from across the peninsula meet here. The surrounding red-earth countryside is known for vast pineapple fields, and the coast nearby has coral reefs protected in a marine reserve.
