Le faʻafanua
Abiko is defined by water. The long, narrow Lake Teganuma lies along its southern side, and the Tone River, one of Japan's largest, runs along the north. The town sits on the raised ground between them. On a map it appears as a band of streets squeezed into a strip, with water pressing in from both sides.
The Joban Line runs through the centre and links Abiko to Tokyo, and the densest streets gather around its stations. Away from the tracks the pattern turns into the small, winding lanes of a Japanese suburb, broken by parks, shrines and patches of farmland that run down to the lakeshore. It is a commuter town, but an unhurried one.
In the early twentieth century, writers of the Shirakaba literary group, among them Shiga Naoya and Mushanokoji Saneatsu, lived by the lake, and the potter Bernard Leach worked here for a time. The shore is also known for birdwatching. An Abiko map poster brings these threads into one image: a quiet town drawn by the water around it.
The lake stretches in a long, thin line along the south of the town. Its dark, elongated shape gives the poster its most recognisable form.
To the north, the broad Tone River and its floodplain form a wide pale band that marks the border with Ibaraki Prefecture.
Around Abiko and Tennodai stations the grid tightens into a compact commercial core. It then relaxes into curving residential lanes as it spreads toward the lake.

Aisea Abiko
Abiko suits people who value quiet places near a big city. A map of the town is a reminder of walks along Teganuma, commutes on the Joban Line, or a home held between lake and river.
Set the title, subtitle and coordinates line to your own words, a family name or the year you moved in. Then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint makes the lake and the river stand out especially clearly.
