Le faʻafanua
Al-Tabqa sits on the southern bank of the Euphrates in northern Syria, directly beside the Tabqa Dam. The dam holds back Lake Assad, the country's largest reservoir, which stretches for many kilometres upstream. On a map, that body of water is the most prominent feature by far, a broad, irregular shoreline that fills much of the composition.
The modern city grew mostly in the 1960s and 1970s alongside the construction of the dam, and for a time it was officially known as al-Thawra. Much of it was laid out as a planned town for workers and their families, with a series of numbered residential districts. An Al-Tabqa map poster shows that planned, modular structure clearly, in regular blocks and wide roads.
Below the dam, the Euphrates continues east as a narrower river towards Raqqa, lined by irrigated farmland. The dam wall itself appears as a short, straight line across the water, a small detail on the map that explains everything else. City, dam and lake together form one of the most distinctive landscapes along the river's course.
The large reservoir behind the dam spreads north and upstream with an irregular, branching shoreline. It is a wide expanse of open water that dominates the map.
The dam wall crosses the Euphrates as a short, straight barrier. That one line separates the wide lake from the narrower river continuing downstream.
The city's residential areas, built in stages for the dam's workforce, appear as regular blocks and broad roads. They are clearly different from the older towns in the region.

Aisea Al-Tabqa
For families from Al-Tabqa, now living nearby or far away, the map shows the city as a place of water, work and homes built around a single great project. It is an image of home that holds its shape across distance.
Edit the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps to include a family name, a district or a date, in Arabic, Kurdish or English. Choose from five styles. Blueprint suits the dam and the planned city.
