Close-set residential blocks
Short, regular blocks cover most of the city. In black and white they form a fine, even texture, which is the clearest sign of how quickly the area filled with homes.

Le faʻafanua
Alvorada sits just northeast of Porto Alegre, part of the metropolitan area around the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. From above, it looks like a tightly packed town. Small residential blocks fill almost every part of the municipal area, and only a few longer roads cross the pattern to link the neighbourhoods to the city next door. Open ground is rare within the built-up area.
The land is mostly flat and low. To the north, the Gravataí River runs through wetlands and floodplain, where the dense street pattern gives way to empty space and slow, winding water. Toward Viamão and Gravataí, the edges of the town blur into neighbouring suburbs. On paper, it can be hard to tell where one municipality ends and the next begins, which is typical of a city that grew up alongside its capital.
The area was once part of Viamão and was known as Passo do Feijó. It became a separate municipality in the 1960s and has grown into one of the most populous suburbs in the region. An Alvorada map poster shows that growth in plain lines. It captures the density of a place many people commute from each day and return to each evening, with its own centre and its own grid.
Short, regular blocks cover most of the city. In black and white they form a fine, even texture, which is the clearest sign of how quickly the area filled with homes.
Along the northern side, the river and its wetlands cut into the street pattern. A soft, irregular band of open ground sets the town apart from the land beyond the water.
To the southwest, Alvorada's streets run straight into Porto Alegre's. Its borders with Viamão and Gravataí are just as continuous, so the poster shows one town inside a larger urban whole.
