Le faʻafanua
Attu Island is the westernmost of the Aleutian Islands and part of the Near Islands, a group named for their closeness to Asia. The island is rugged and mountainous, with a coastline cut by deep, steep-sided bays that reach far inland. Seen from above, its outline looks clawed and irregular, with narrow ridges running between the inlets and very little flat ground anywhere.
The island's geography is best read through its bays: Massacre Bay, Holtz Bay and Chichagof Harbor are all deep inlets that shaped where people landed and where events unfolded. There are no roads beyond remnants of military and Coast Guard infrastructure, and since the LORAN station closed in 2010 the island has had no permanent residents. The map is mostly mountain and water.
Attu is known above all for the Battle of Attu in May 1943, when American forces retook the island from Japanese occupation in one of the few land battles of the Second World War fought on US soil. The Aleut village of Attu was never re-established after the war. An Attu Island map poster records this remote place with the restraint it calls for.

On the northeast coast, Holtz Bay branches into two arms, a shape clearly visible on the map and the site of a Japanese base during the occupation.
A sheltered inlet in the northeast, once the site of the island's Aleut village, set among steep ridges that fall directly to the water.

This map speaks to veterans' families, historians of the Pacific war and anyone drawn to the far ends of the map. Attu's broken outline and empty interior give it a sober presence that fits a study or a memorial wall.
