Le faʻafanua
Bayt Jālā sits on high ground immediately west of Bethlehem in the West Bank, so close that the two towns merge on the map. It is a historically Christian town, and its churches and monasteries are part of its identity. The terrain is steep, with slopes terraced for olive trees and orchards, and the town has long been known for its olives and apricots.
From above, the streets follow the contours of the hills in long curves and switchbacks, with houses built in rows along them. There is little that could be called a grid. The older core is dense and irregular, while newer neighbourhoods spread along the ridges. To the west, the Cremisan monastery and its vineyards, known for their wine, sit among the terraced slopes.
A Bayt Jālā map poster captures a town drawn by its terrain: every line of the street network answers a slope. The contrast between tightly curving roads and the open, farmed terraces around them makes a delicate composition. For people from Beit Jala living abroad, including many in Latin America, it is a way to hang the shape of home on the wall.
Roads wind across the hillsides in loops and hairpin bends, following the lie of the land. This is the map's most distinctive feature, a flowing pattern that looks almost like a fingerprint.
Olive groves and orchards cover stepped terraces around the town. With few streets, they appear as open space between the strips of housing along the ridges.
To the west, the Cremisan monastery stands among vineyards and terraces. It is a landmark known for its winery and for the green valley around it.
