Le faʻafanua
Belo Oriente sits in eastern Minas Gerais, near the Vale do Aço, the industrial region around Ipatinga and Timóteo. The Rio Doce passes through the municipality, and on a map its wide, winding course is the most prominent natural feature, with the town and its roads arranged in relation to the valley. Around them, rolling hills are covered in pasture and planted forest.
The municipality is known for its pulp industry: Cenibra, one of Brazil's major producers of eucalyptus pulp, operates a large mill here, and eucalyptus plantations cover much of the surrounding land. The result is a landscape where the rhythm of rural hills is interrupted by the large, geometric footprint of industry, clearly visible from above.
A Belo Oriente map poster brings together the river's curves, the town's grid of streets and the smaller settlements spread across the municipality. In black and white, the contrast between the flowing line of the Rio Doce and the straight edges of roads and plots gives the print a strong structure, part natural and part engineered.
The river winds across the municipality in broad bends, the defining natural line on the map and a large part of the reason the valley attracted settlement and industry.
The pulp mill appears as a large, orderly block of buildings and roads, a distinctly engineered shape set among hills and farmland.
Surrounding slopes carry pasture and eucalyptus plantations, leaving the map around the town relatively open, crossed by farm roads and small watercourses.
