Le faʻafanua
Cabra lies in the south of Córdoba province, in the Subbética area of Andalusia. Its old quarter, called the Villa, sits on higher ground where the castle once stood, and the rest of the town spreads downhill from there in closely packed streets. On a map the pattern is dense and irregular at the centre, loosening as it reaches the olive groves around the edges.
Just east of town is the limestone Sierra de Cabra, whose highest point, the Picacho, holds the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Sierra. Close to the centre, the Fuente del Río marks the spring of the small river that flows through the town. The former railway line, now part of the Vía Verde de la Subbética greenway, crosses the landscape as a smooth curve.
Cabra is known as the birthplace of the nineteenth-century novelist Juan Valera, the author of Pepita Jiménez. A Cabra map poster shows the town as a traditional Andalusian settlement: an old core on the high ground, a winding street network below it and wide farmland beyond.
The historic upper quarter around the old castle site forms the densest part of the map, with narrow, irregular streets typical of Andalusian hill towns.
The spring and park at the source of the town's river appear as a patch of green and water close to the built-up centre.
The old railway, converted into a walking and cycling route, traces a long, gentle curve through the olive country around Cabra.

Cabra is a place people return to for family, for the town's festivals or to walk in the sierra. A map of its streets keeps that sense of home visible long after the visit ends.
