Le faʻafanua
Cape Coral fills a broad peninsula between the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf-side waters of Matlacha Pass. Its most distinctive feature from above is the canal network. The city is often said to have more miles of canals than any other city in the world, around four hundred. On a map, residential streets and canals alternate in long parallel lines, forming an extremely fine texture.
The city was planned in the late 1950s by developers who dredged the canals and sold waterfront lots, often sight unseen. As a result, the plan looks more like engineering than history: straight channels, rows of dead-end streets, and wide turning basins. Some canals lead out to the river and the Gulf, and others remain closed freshwater systems.
A Cape Coral map poster shows the river along the southern and eastern edges, the two bridges that cross toward Fort Myers, and the mangrove shoreline to the west. In the north, the grid is laid out but still thinly built, so the pattern extends past the houses. The whole city reads as a drawing of land and water in equal amounts.
Hundreds of miles of dredged canals run between the residential streets, forming dense parallel bands that make the city instantly recognisable from above.
The wide river frames the south and east of the city, crossed by the Cape Coral and Midpoint bridges that connect it to Fort Myers.
On the western side, the planned grid gives way to the irregular edges of mangrove islands and Matlacha Pass, a softer natural boundary.
