Le faʻafanua
Ch’ench’a sits high in the Gamo highlands of southern Ethiopia, well above the Rift Valley floor and the town of Arba Minch. The road up from the lowlands winds through a long series of bends, and on a map these switchbacks are one of the most striking features. The town itself spreads along the high ground, with streets and paths following the contours of steep, cultivated slopes.
The area is known for the Dorze people, whose villages nearby are famous for tall, beehive-shaped houses made of bamboo and ensete leaves and for fine hand-woven cotton cloth. From the highlands there are views down toward Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo on clear days. The cool climate and terraced fields give the district a character quite different from the hot plains below.
A Ch’ench’a map poster traces the drama of the terrain in simple lines: the looping mountain road, the streets strung along high ground and the web of footpaths crossing farmland on every side. It is a map that rewards close looking, and it makes a meaningful gift for anyone who has made the climb or who has roots in the Gamo highlands.
The road from Arba Minch climbs in tight repeated bends, drawing a zigzag on the map that shows how steeply the town rises above the valley.
The town's streets stretch along the high ground, giving the settlement a long, narrow outline shaped by the surrounding slopes and ravines.
Small fields and footpaths cover the surrounding slopes, forming a fine, intricate texture around the town that reflects the long tradition of highland farming.
