Salt ponds
Shallow inland ponds once used for salt production lie just behind the town. Their irregular shapes and dividing walls give the map a pattern few towns share.

Le faʻafanua
Cockburn Town sits on Grand Turk, a small, flat island in the Turks and Caicos. From above, the town is a narrow strip along the western shore, with streets running parallel to the sea. Just inland lie shallow salt ponds, known as salinas, divided by old walls and causeways. The town fits into the thin band of land between the ocean and these ponds.
For centuries the island's economy relied on salt, raked from the salinas and shipped out by sea. Front Street and Duke Street, lined with older buildings, run close to the waterfront. Cockburn Town is the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands, although the much larger island of Providenciales is the main centre for tourism. Offshore, the seabed drops steeply into deep water, a feature well known to divers.
A Cockburn Town map poster has an unusual texture. The straight shoreline and its parallel streets form one side, while the salt ponds add irregular, geometric shapes inland. The flat island and open water make the composition quiet and airy. It is a distinctive map of a very small and very old Caribbean capital.

The historic street running along the waterfront, lined with older buildings. It traces the shoreline and marks the oldest part of the town.
A long, fairly straight coastline faces the open sea. Beyond it, the water deepens quickly, which has made the coast a known destination for wall diving.
