Le faʻafanua
Córdoba, Argentina's second-largest city, was founded in 1573 on the banks of the Suquía River, also known as the Río Primero. The founding grid still sits at the heart of the map, a regular pattern of square blocks around Plaza San Martín. The river curves along the northern edge of the centre, and La Cañada, a stone-lined canal, crosses the city from the south.
Córdoba is known for its university, founded in the early seventeenth century and among the oldest in the Americas, and for the Manzana Jesuítica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the university's original buildings. The student population gives neighbourhoods such as Nueva Córdoba a distinct character, and on a map that district shows up as tightly packed blocks south of the centre.
Avenida Circunvalación forms a ring road around much of the city, and beyond it suburbs spread toward the foothills of the Sierras de Córdoba to the west. A Córdoba map poster shows this layered structure: the colonial centre, the curve of the river, the inner districts and the outer ring, arranged with remarkable clarity.
Square blocks around Plaza San Martín form the original sixteenth-century layout, still clearly regular at the centre of the map and easy to trace street by street.
The river winds east through the city north of the centre, with parks and roads following its banks, a soft curve across an otherwise orderly plan.
A stone-lined canal runs through the city toward the Suquía, lined by trees and a road on each side, a fine linear feature in the street pattern.
